Description
WEST VIRGINIA STENCILED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, approximately half-gallon capacity, cylindrical form with flat-top rounded, a beaded neck, slight shoulder, Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt curved "[Knox], Haught & Co. / Shinnston. W. Va.", additional ornaments to middle and below. Circa 1873. 9 1/4" H, 5 3/4" D rim.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Clarence and Coralena Smith, Romney, WV.
Catalogue Note: William Knox and William Haught began a joint pottery business on Main Street in Shinnston in the early 1870s. Knox did not remain a partner long, selling his entire share to the Haught before 1880. It is believed the name "Knox" was intentionally blotted out after Knox's departure, as other jars were observed in internet searches with the name made illegible.
