Item Details
Description
"Japanese Haiku. Two hundred twenty Examples of seventeen-syllable poems" The verses by Buson, Basho, Issa, Shiki, Joso, Kyorai, Kikaku, Chora, Gyodai, Kakei, Izen and others. Translated into English by Peter Beilenson, published by Peter Pauper Press, Mount Vernon, New York, 1956, First Edition in original dust jacket.

"Japanese Haiku" is an excellent introduction to this poetic genre. This volume covers many topics and highlights the art form, itself, making it a superb choice for people new to this form of poetry. The translator Peter Beilenson's goal was twofold: to craft a book of haiku accessible to anyone, and to render his best guess at what the poets would have written in English. His translations preserve the sublime spirit of each verse, conjuring vivid visual and emotional impressions in spare words.

Original dust jacket with un-clipped price on the front board [some edge wear and darkened spine: see photos], hard boards have the same design as the dust jacket; 4.1/2" x 7.1/2"; 61 pages, all pages are decorated [see photos], very good near fine condition.

Haiku is a type of short form poetry originally from Japan. Traditional Japanese haiku consist of three phrases that contain a kireji, or "cutting word", 17 on (phonetic units similar to syllables) in a 5, 7, 5 pattern, and a kigo, or seasonal reference. Similar poems that do not adhere to these rules are generally classified as senryu. In Japanese, haiku are traditionally printed as a single line, while haiku in English often appear as three lines.
