Description
By Meikeisai Hojitsu, Tokyo, Mid 19th century. Riding a hobby-horse, his right foot raised and the wheel of the horse protruding from under the rear of his robe which is elegantly engraved with Buddhist symbols. The cap is nicely stippled, both the reins and the sandal straps show alternating engraved bands of black and the horse's mane has been bobbed. Signed on the sole of the right foot, Hojitsu. 2 1/4in (5.8cm). Provenance: Sotheby's, London, July, 26, 1967; Lot 402.
