DESCRIPTION: Coastal scene at sunset with ships. James Hamilton (19th C; Ireland, Philadelphia, PA). Oil on wood. Faint signature to lower right corner. Jas. Hamilton. to plaque at bottom of frame. Marked 3946 in circle in red to back. In gilt frame. Born in Ireland and moving to Philadelphia, PA at age 15, James Hamilton is known for his seascapes down the east coast from New York to Maryland. Having attended the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, he became an admirer of England's J.M.W. Turner, and was known as The American Turner. He is especially known for his lighting effects in his coastal scenes. MEASUREMENTS: 7-1/2" high x 11" wide; frame 4-1/4" wide. CONDITION: 2-1/2" white line to right of painting and 1-1/2" and 2" white marks to upper left side. Wear to wood. Wear, chips, and cracks to frame. DP.
