DESCRIPTION: "Mr. D.E. Grace Darling, Winner/of the Kingstonbottom Steeple Chase/Rode by W.T.F. 1847". James Clark (British, 1858-1943). Oil on canvas. Signed right of bottom middle J. Clark. In gilt wood and composition frame with faded J. Clark 1847 to center. James Clark was first noticed by a wide audience in 1914 when his painting entitled The Great Sacrifice was reproduced as the souvenir print issued by The Graphic illustrated newspaper. This painting depicted a soldier who lay dying on a battlefield with an vision of Christ on the Cross above and was popular in both the religious and secular worlds. Clark also became widely known for his many horse paintings. MEASUREMENTS: 16-3/4" high x 23" wide; frame 2-1/2" wide. CONDITION: Restored in 2006 with accompanying receipt and pictures.
