Description
During the Great Depression, many individuals were forced to make do with what they had. If you had an interest in shallow water diving but could not afford a diving helmet, then you made your own. Magazines such as Popular Mechanics ran articles about making a diving helmet out of scrap materials. Possibly that inspiration is where the idea for this one of a kind homemade diving helmet came from.
This helmet features a curved breastplate that is attached to the bonnet. A large acrylic curved window (cracked) is held in with 8 bolts allowing the diver a great field of view. On the left and right are carrying handles. An air line fitting elbow is on the back. The very top has a threaded plug. On the divers right side is a female threaded brass fitting. The front and back of the breastplate has three holes used to secure lead weight. The helmet measures approximately 20 inches tall, 15 inches wide, and 13.5 inches deep.
This helmet was found in California, where it has likely been all its life. Pieces of American ingenuity like this are wonderful unique pieces of diving history. While there are likely similar constructed helmets, this one is its own unique creation!
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
