Item Details
Description

One of the most desirable and rare American diving helmets is the 5 bolt pattern made by the A.J. Morse company in Boston, Massachusetts, aka the US Navy Mark 1. This style of helmet was used by the US Navy in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century before the Mark V made its debut in 1916. Commercial divers would also use this style during these time periods as well.

This model is unique in that the bonnet (top) and breastplate (bottom) are secured together via 5 large bolts at the neck ring. Traditionally helmets were threaded together, but this style was favored by some. While the US Navy used the 5 bolt pattern, helmets in their inventory after 1916 were generally retro-fitted into a threaded style, making the surviving 5 bolt helmets quite rare!

This beautiful example was made circa 1900. The helmets ID plate is present and easy to read A.J. Morse & Son; Boston, Mass; U.S.A. We are able to put a relatively specific date on this helmet from its serial numbers, which are located at both neck rings and on the brails. Serial #1056 is located on the breastplate neck ring and all four brails. The bonnet has serial number 1059, just 3 numbers off, something we will go into further detail below. The communications cup is stamped Patented Dec 20, 1898.

This helmet does have some interesting history which we will document in a certificate of authenticity. The helmet was discovered by Nations Attic in 2018. The helmet was a forgotten piece of inventory of the Albert C. Wescoat Company in Atlantic City, NJ. According to a letter from the last company owner, this helmet was likely acquired by the company when the US Navy confiscated their tugboats at the start of WWII. The company was given some outdated equipment as some form of payment, which included this helmet.

The helmet was used in and around Atlantic City, NJ, with a manual air pump until it was replaced after World War 2. When discovered, the helmet had been regulated to an old outhouse where it had been neglected. The co-owner of Nations Attic, Jenny Creekmore, decided to have the helmet restored back to dive ready condition. The helmet was given to the experts at DESCO who owns Morse, for a correct restoration with the goal to dive the helmet. The helmet required work on the copper body, new brails to be custom made and fitted, new wing nuts, new glass, modern communications installed, and full pressure testing to ensure its safety. Photos of the helmet before restoration will be provided to the high bidder. The was aged, giving it the current look which is consistent with its appearance when it was found as documented in many photos.

Without a doubt, this helmet is complete, plus some. A rare circa 1900 A.J. Morse stamped non-return valve was serviced, tested, and installed during the restoration. Correct new gaskets were installed on the faceplate and neck ring. New communications inside the bonnet were installed and test as well. Lastly, a small copper disk was placed inside the bonnet documenting the completion of its restoration in May of 2019.

The helmet has yet to be put in the water since restoration. The next owner will have the thrill of adding to the helmets long history of adventure.

In 1916 the US Navy printed a diving manual. In that publication, they defined the types of helmets that were in use by the Navy up to 1916. A 5 bolt Morse helmet, like this one, was classified as a Mark 1. This specific helmet matches all the criteria for that classification without a doubt. This helmet is a very rare and desirable investment quality piece and a special piece of American diving history that will not disappoint!

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.

All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail. Worldwide shipping is available; however, no ocean freight will be offered on large items. DHL Express is an option for international shipments under 600 pounds via air. Payment via bank wire for customers outside the USA is required. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
