Description
1854 Opium War Japanese China Qing Ming Sorcery Taiping Shujin Woodblock Print
An interesting 18th century woodblock-print of Military Tales of the Qing vs Ming by Seiei Shujin written as an account of the Opium War and the Taiping rebellion. These accounts are primarily military tales and focus on characters such as Hong Wulong a General for the Ming, or Li Boyu, a courageous female general who can perform sorcery. The book interestingly paints British soldiers as “barbarians” who have to “cower” to the Chinese Ming Warriors. This book offended the governmental authorities, and so, woodcuts were confiscated, and the author was thrown into prison.
This rare 1854 edition is written in a column format with furigana usage for easier reading. This volume is bound in the “fukurotoji (variously translated as “bound-pocket,” or “pouch” binding)” style!
