Description

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Northern Highlands, Recuay culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. An endearing pottery vessel in the form of a seated mother holding a sleeping child as lengthy coiffure falls down her back. The woman wears a belt as scrolling tattoos adorn her chin, both indicating that she holds an elevated social status. Noble women are depicted fairly often in Recuay art, and typically hold a variety of objects, ranging from vessels that may refer to feasts held on important political events to petite figures typically interpreted as children, as seen here. The representations suggest that Recuay women held authority independent of their male partners, which may have stemmed from their participation in feasting ceremonies.

Condition

Professionally repaired and resorted with expected nicks and abrasions commensurate with age. Modern green pigment applied to incised areas of hair and faces. Otherwise, excellent presentation with great remaining pigments. Nice earthen deposits in areas.
