Very early and important illustration from United States House Executive Document No. 1, 30th Congress, Second Session, Richard Mason, 1848. Page is composed of two arial map views. Top is titled "Upper Mines, Nos 1&8." Labelled in the illustration below the South Fork of the American River are Sutter's Saw Mill and a location marked "Gold first found." Lower illustration is titled "Lower Mines or Mormon Diggings. No. 3." Shows a bend in the South Fork of the American River with an area labelled "Gold." Each illustration is 4 x 6". Gold was discovered in January 1848 by James Marshall in the tailrace of the sawmill he was building in partnership with John Sutter. Richard Barnes Mason (1797-1850) was an Army officer and the fifth Military Governor of California. Mason toured the gold diggings along the American River north east of Sacramento in June, 1848. His report was written in Monterey in August 17, 1848.
