Description
After William Alexander (1767-1816) English, a bound portfolio of thirty-nine engravings, published by G. Nicol, April 12, 1796, depicting Chinese technology, landscapes, cityscapes, temples, fortresses, engineering technology, canals, wildlife, culture, architectural drawings, instruments of war, along with eight maps during the first British Envoy to China. Page size, 16.5" x 22". Note: William Alexander was a proficient English painter, illustrator, and engraver. He was also one of the two official artists who accompanied the Macartney Embassy to China in 1792-94, which was Great Britain's first envoy to China. Alexander was best known for his drawings of this Macartney mission. Some of his drawings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, and were displayed at the Brighton Pavilion for George IV.
