Description
Large cast iron kettle signed "E. WHITELEY BOSTON PATENTED AUG 30 1863 30 GALLS." Edward Whitely was from Cambridge Massachusetts with a business address of 59-61 Charlestown St., Boston Mass. On August 13, 1863 Mr. Whitely received a patent for this cast iron "Double Jacket Kettle". Appears to retain its original copper lid. While it has withstood the test of time, it does have pitting, one loose leg, but otherwise good overall condition. Size approximately 30"H x 30"D - sets on 3 cast iron legs. Provenance: This pot was orignally discovered on the island of Nantucket in 1930 and it was believed to have been a whaling "Try Pot". The owners moved to a farm in Hyde Park NY in 1940 taking the pot with them and using it for steaming shellfish. It remained on the farm for 50 years and was rediscovered by the new owners partially buried in the soil. The new owners did a great deal of research and determined that the pot was most likely, not a whaling "Try Pot", but actually a large steaming pot invented by Edward Whiteley. We are including all the documentation from various sources including the Nantucket Whaling Museum that will authenticate this story.
