FINE RUSSIAN ICON SAVIOR OF THE WET BEARD, ST. PETERSBURG 1901. Comprising a finely painted presentation icon being a variant of the Image Not Made By Hands. Here the face of Christ is shown with the hair and beard of Christ still wet from the water in which he washed his face prior to the miraculous imprinting of his image on the cloth. The hair of the beard is pointed and pulled down towards one side with a small fork at the tip. While this subject is often identified with the title SPAS MOKRAYA BORODA (Savior of the Wet Beard) in this example is inscribed the title The Not Made By Hands Image of our Christ Our Savior near the tip of the beard. The borders are painted with various family saints. From top to bottom on the left are; Saint John Chrysostom, the Venerable Saint Paul, and Saint Alexander Nevsky. On the right; Saint Peter of Athos, Saint Anastasia and the Venerable Saint Mikhail Maleina. The verso of icon with a large engraved silver gilt plaque with dedicatory inscription rendered in Russian being a gift from a mother to her son on his 25th birthday. It reads, "God save your slave Paul from Anger and sickness, teach him to always be a true Orthodox Christian, an honest worker, good family man, teach him to love his fellow family members and help them when they are in need, especially children and elderly, for that God will grant His salvation. Blessings to my beloved dear and obedient son Pavel from his loving mother. 21st August 1876-21st August 1901." The entire image overlaid with a beautifully crafted silver gilt, repousse and chased oklad, hallmarked Saint Petersburg 1896-1901, Cyrillic maker's mark I.G., for Ivan Gubkin and 84 silver standard. 12.5 inches x 10.5 inches (32 x 26.5 cm).
