Description

JAPANESE CARVED GILT BUDDHA, EDO. Comprising a large and impressive carved and gilt wood Amida Nyorai Buddha seated cross legged on a lotus throne, hands joined in the mudra of contemplation, eyes all but closed in meditation, and flanked by his attendants, on the left Kannon, hands ready to receive the souls of the dying, and on the right Seishi with hands clasped in prayer. The forehead of the Buddha and center of hair set with cabochons. Finely carved in full round with deep folds, good proportions and anatomy. Together with an ornately carved red lacquer and gilt wood decorative arch with suspension devices on verso, and from which is suspended carved gilt wood bells and chimes as shown. The Buddha height 25.5 inches (65cm). Height of arch 29.25 inches (74cm), width of arch 46 inches (116cm).
