Description
Eisenhower Signed, Personally Owned French Military Dictionary
34th President of the U.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) personally owned and signed copy of “The Dictionnaire Militaire”. Paris/Nancy: Librairie Militaire Berger-Levrault, 1911. Signed on the half-title page, “Dwight D Eisenhower”. Blind embossed stamp and several internal rubber stamps, a few of which have been crossed out, indicating that this copy was once the property of U.S. Army Technical Library, Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. Pebbled leather boards, gilt titling to the spine, marbled endpapers at front and back. Tear at top of half-title page, not affecting signature. Toning, foxing, some areas of minor water staining, and a few scattered pencil notations. Wear to spine with some separation beginning on the cover and chipping to edges. Bold signature with some ink feathering to the “g” in “Dwight”. Overall in very good condition. 7.5" x 10.75", 404pp.
Although Eisenhower was not formally stationed at the Edgewood Arsenal, the canceled library marks, placement of the signature, and lack of inscription or date give every indication that his signature is a mark of ownership rather than an autograph for another officer or autograph collector. This would most likely have been acquired by Eisenhower after World War I, when the library had less use for it. An intriguing example worthy of further research.
