Nathan Mayer Rothschild was the third son of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812), the founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty and family patriarch. Originally of German Jewish ancestry, the Rothschild Family had emerged as a preeminent banking house in the eighteenth century. Nathan had established the family branch in London after 1798. The family's sphere of influence was expanded by also establishing satellite banks in Paris, Vienna, and Naples. By the early nineteenth century, the Rothschilds were one of the most significant financial concerns in Europe. It became the creditor of teetering monarchies, bankrupt kingdoms, and fledgling nation states in Europe, the Americas, and Africa.
