Jackie Robinson TLS Re: Civil Rights, “I agree there is much to be done.”

ROBINSON, Jackie. Typed Letter Signed, "Jackie", 1p, on his personal letterhead, 7.25” x 10.5”, New York, February 16, 1966. Stamped “Received” on February 21, 1966 at top right. An unknown hand has penned a telephone number in red ink at bottom left. Letter has expected mailing folds with light soiling and toning, else in near fine condition.

Robinson writes to Bernard Katzen, Vice Chairman for the State Commission for Human Rights, "Anytime after March 1, 1955, would be fine for my engagement. Please call me at JU2-7030 and leave the message. I will get in touch with you. / I agree there is much to be done. Any help would be appreciated.”

Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) was an American professional baseball player and Civil Rights icon who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. When the Dodgers signed Robinson, it heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball that had relegated black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
