Otto Sarony Co. Photograph of Minnie Maddern Fiske, Very Elegant
A black and white photograph of Minnie Maddern Fiske, dressed in an elegant black dress, elaborate hat, and a fur muff. Measuring 9" x 12.25", New York, n.d [ca. 1907]. Mounted to thick cardstock, measuring 11.5" x 15.75" overall. The cardstock has Otto Sarony Co. stamped at the lower left margin. On verso "Fisk" has been written in pencil in an unknown hand. Toning, light foxing, and soiling to the cardstock, along with some wear and material loss. Minor soiling and a few faint scratches to the photograph. Overall, very good.
Otto Sarony (1850–1903) was a celebrity portrait photographer and son of Napoleon Sarony, the premier theatrical photographer of the 19th century. Otto's business photographed the likes of Evelyn Nesbit, Clara Blandick, Richard Bennett, Elsie Leslie and other stars of stage and screen as well as other celebrities such as boxer Jack Johnson under his name. The actual photographers who took each portrait were uncredited.
Minnie Maddern Fiske (1865-1932), often billed simply as Mrs. Fiske, was a leading American actress of the late 19th and early 20th century. She also spearheaded the fight against the Theatrical Syndicate for the sake of artistic freedom.
