Description
Three carved wood monkey masks representing Dege (the black monkey) Ko (the red monkey,) and Omono (the white monkey.) Each of the three colors represents characteristics prized or eschewed in Dogon society. The three masks are highly abstract in form, the lower part with concave facial plane interrupted only by two large rectangular eye holes, and each mask surmounted by a large finial in the form of a monkey, the faces echoing the elongated eyes of the mask, the curved bodies with arms akimbo, hands joined, forming a large hollow resembling open lips. The traditional black, white, and red coloration is augmented by the unusal addition of metallic silver paint, bright as chrome, and decorative patterns in silver and colors to the faces. Largest mask, approx. 19 1/4" H x 6" W x 5 1/2" D. Provenance: Estate of Thomas McNemar, (1931-2020.) McNemar lived and collected throughout Central and West Africa in the 1960s and 70s. He established galleries of African Art in New York and San Francisco, selling to museums and public and private collections in the United States and Europe.
