Description
Japanese school of the first half of the 20th century.
"Portrait of ladies".
Set of three oil paintings on glass.
Two of them signed.
The frames are damaged.
Measurements: 26 x 20 cm; 29 x 23 cm (frame).
This set of three portraits is inspired by the Ukiyo-e ("floating world") images, or Japanese woodcuts, colour prints produced in Japan since the 17th century, which illustrate landscapes, themes of the theatre or pleasure houses, genre scenes, folklore, etc., often featuring famous actors or geishas. Although ukiyo-e enjoyed its greatest popularity in Japan during the second half of the 17th century, it was discovered in Europe at the end of the 19th century, when artists such as Van Gogh noticed the paper, in fact prints, which wrapped porcelain and other objects imported from Japan. From then on, a large number of artists began to collect these prints, which fascinated Western artists with their radically different concept, their essentiality and their expressive power, and which represented a real revolution for European art, marking a turning point in its evolution.
