Description
A somber yet heartwarming oil painting on canvas depicting a big-eyed cat in a cityscape by "Gig" or Girard Goodenow. Known for his sad looking "pity kitty," Gig achieved a certain reputation as an artist in the mid-20th century because of his unique illustration style. Many prints of the big-eyed cats exist, but a unique oil painting is a rare find. From a private collection. Dimensions: 25.5"h x 20.5"w (framed). In very good vintage condition. Girard "Gig" Goodenow (1912-1984) was a New York based graphic designer and commercial artist. He was an illustrator for Women's Day magazine between 1939-1943, as well as Good Housekeeping and Seventeen. Goodenow also did illustrations for children's books. In March of 1965, he created a series of nine oil paintings of cats for Woman's day, which were displayed at the library in North Merrick, NY. Today, Goodenow's big-eyed cat paintings are iconic and embedded with a post-war nostalgia.
