A dramatic gelatin silver print titled "Chambered Nautilus" by Andreas Feininger. Circa 1950. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with an annotation of 2/10 on the bottom left. From the artist's "Portfolio of Shells" series. An extraordinary example of Feininger's natural object photography in which the details of the shell can be observed on a large scale. The photographs are minimalistic and sophisticated. Provenance: This photograph was part of a collection of a seasoned art expert who amassed an impressive collection of 500+ artworks and artifacts in their lifetime. Collector acquired photograph from the Kresge (Kmart) Foundation in Detroit. Asset tag number and gallery tag on verso. Dimensions: 20"h x 16"w (framed). In very good vintage condition. Andreas Feininger (1906-1999) was an American photographer and a writer on photographic technique. He was noted for his dynamic black-and-white scenes of Manhattan and for studies of the structures of natural objects. Today, Feininger's photographs are in the permanent collections of the Center for Creative Photography, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, London's Victoria and Albert Museum, and the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York.
