Arnoldus Montanus (Dutch C.1625-1683) "Miako" (Kyoto), hand-colored copper engraving. Framed. The view based on descriptions of emissaries of the Dutch East India Company about their encounters in Japan with the natives and the Portuguese. The earliest obtainable Western view of the Imperial city of Kyoto, viewed from across the banks of the Camo River. Size: 10.75'' x 30.5'', 27 x 77 cm (sight); 18'' x 37.5'', 46 x 95 cm (frame). Provenance: Sylvia and Philip Chaplain Collection, New Hampshire.
