Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This is a chin guard or hanbo (hanpo) that is part of the facial armor worn by the Samurai warriors made from iron and lacquered with black and red. Hanbo covered the lower chin area and the segmented lower three panes protect the neck and are secured via cotton cords to the main mask. The hole in the chin was for releasing sweat inside and the hooks to the side secured the rest of the helmet. Interestingly these Samurai masks inspired the costume of the infamous "Star Wars" character Darth Vader! Size: 7" L x 6.5" W (17.8 cm x 16.5 cm)
