Description
Wifredo Lam was born on December 8, 1902 in Sagua la Grande, in Cuba. He is the eighth child of Lam-Yam, born in Canton around 1820 and emigrated to the Americas in 1860, and Ana Serafina Castilla, born in 1862 in Cuba and a mestizo descendant of families of Spanish and African origin.By the early 1930s his Surrealist influence was evident, as was that of Henri Matisse and also possibly that of JoaquÃÂn Torres GarcÃÂa.In 1936, visiting an exhibition of Pablo Picasso, he was strongly attracted to him, both artistically and politically. In that same year, helped by his friend Faustino Cordón, he joined the People's Army of the Republic as a volunteer in its fight against Francisco Franco's coup troops in the context of the Spanish civil war. He draws anti-fascist posters and is in charge of the direction of a munitions factory. The violence of the fighting inspired his large canvas entitled The Civil War.In 1938 he went to live in Paris, where Picasso himself took him under his tutelage and nurtured his interest in African art and primitive masks. In that same year he traveled to Mexico, where he stayed with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
