WWII Army Uniform of General Robert Richardson Commander Pacific Forces
Item Details
Description
Original 1943 dated Regulation Army winter uniform jacket owned and worn by Lieutenant General Robert C. Richardson during his service in Hawaii as Commander of Army Forces in the Pacific and Military Governor of Hawaii. The uniform, bearing a Rogers Peet Co. New York Tailor label having Maj. Gen. Richardson and a 1943 date typed onto it. The Uniform bears a wound stripe in bullion on the right sleeve and eight overseas service stripes and chevrons on the left sleeve representing Richardson's overseas service in both World Wars. The original sewn on service ribbons are complete to the end of Richardson's military career, in October, 1946. The jacket also bears a shoulder patch to the U.S. Army Pacific Command. Restored to the jacket are two period WWII US Officer insignias, and six pin back modern General Officer stars. The patches, stripes, and sewn ribbons are original to the uniform. The jacket is accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance noting that this jacket was sold in 2014 from the family estate of Gen. Richardson, and includes a printout of the sale photo. Also included are ten re-print glossy photos of Gen. Richardson procured from the National Archives. He served in the Army from 1904 - 1946, and was promoted to Four Star General posthumously upon his death in 1954. Some of Richardsons awards include an Army Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Silver Star, Air Medal, Purple Heart, Philippine Campaign Medal, WWI Victory Medal with three campaign stars, Army of Occupation WWI, American Defense, American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific service with 5 campaign stars, WWII Victory, French Legion of Honor, French WWI Croix de Guerre, Belgian Order of Leopold, Italian Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus, and 1918 Panama Solidarity Medal. In June 1944 General Richardson disputed Marine General Holland Smiths removal of Army General Ralph C. Smith from command of the Army 27th Division during the Saipan campaign. General Richardson, as the administrative commander of all Pacific Army personnel, questioned whether Marine General Smith, as the operational commander, had the authority to relieve Army General Smith and whether the relief was justified by the facts. This minor inter-service controversy was fanned by the media into controversy over Pacific war strategy and led to a bitter inter-service relationship in the Pacific Theater. At the core, this was a difference of opinion between U.S. Navy/USMC and U.S. Army over command authority, pre-campaign planning, and operational tactics. Also fueling this was Gen. Holland Smiths low opinion and poor treatment of the Army personnel under his control. NOTE: This lot has a modest reserve set price.
