Item Details
Description
  • Artist: Tsukioka YOSHITOSHI (1839-93)
  • Tile: On a rainy, stormy day
  • Series: Preparatory drawings and figure studies
  • Date: c. 1880s
  • Medium: Black ink and red underdrawing on thin paper
  • Size/Format: 13 3/8" x 9 1/2"
  • Description: The sheet contains three preparatory drawings, each in a variant stage of completion. To start from the end: the main drawing depicts a man with an umbrella in front of the entrance to a house looking towards a woman and a boy further back, who seem to protect themselves from rain and heavy wind. The drawing ('shita-e') with a first rough outline sketch in red color (the red underdrawing), which then was further worked out in black ink, seems to be in its final stage, ready to be handed over to the copyist who would work out further details on a new drawing sheet, - the 'hanshita-e' -. This then would have been handed over to the block cutter who would produce the printing key block. The 'hanshita-e' would then be pasted upside down onto the printing block and the carver would cut out the key block lines of the sketch, by which process the hanshita-e would have been destroyed. - The upper half of the sheet shows figure studies of a man and a woman with child, - again a first rough, red underdrawing from which the artist would develop the almost finished drawing in black ink. The sheet also contains two rough figure studies entirely in red color. - Yoshitoshi seems to have been the first Japanese print artist who made use of the underdrawing entirely executed in red color, which helped him to further develop the sketch towards its final version, - while the surviving preparatory drawings by his early teacher, Kuniyoshi e.g., were exclusively executed in black ink).
