Description
Zulu / Tsonga maternity staff or scepter
Style of the Baboon Master
In "Art and Ambiguity", Sandra Klopper credits this sculptor with a set of scepters surmounted by baboons and human figures
Extract: "Itinerant and prolific artist, he seems to have produced a large body of wooden pieces of remarkable quality with the help of his student-apprentices. Indeed, the stylistic variations observable among the large number of scepters today preserved in public or private collections, suggest that this production was made by several hands"
The researcher also believes that the works of this master are hybrids, both Zulu and Tsonga.
If we compare this piece to the canes sold by Sotheby's (lot 93 - The Amy & Elliot Lawrence Collection 24/05/2022 Lot 236 - Un autre regard: Collection Edric van Vredenburgh, Part II, Paris, 14/04/2022), the style is so close that it can be attributed to one of his students/apprentices or at least to one of his followers
PROVENANCE: Ex Collection Mr Guerin
Ex Belgian-French Collection of Mr Ph.V.
