Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire, Angkor Period, ca. 12th century CE. An extraordinary and wearable ring with a solid 92.3% to 94.6% gold (equivalent to 22K+) band and elegant setting inlaid with a red garnet! This style is often referred to as a "Temple Ring," and reflects Buddhist symbolism, the stacked setting resembles the raised foundation or socle of traditional stupas, also known as chedi in Cambodia. The upturned lotus petals cup a beaded and rhomboid shaped bezel that contains a lightly polished, uncut garnet. Hindu-Buddhist elements shaped Southeast Asia before and during the early Khmer empire, while later Javanese conquest influenced the ornate and lavish styles of jewelry during the Angkor period. Architectural features were created in gold jewelry, reflecting the magnificent carvings and motifs of temples and other impressive buildings of the period. Size of ring face: 0.55" L x 0.56" W (1.4 cm x 1.4 cm); band opening: 0.8" Diameter (2 cm); US ring size: 8; gold quality: 92.3% to 94.6% (equivalent to 22K+); weight: 13.4 grams
