Item Details
Description
John S. Koenig (American, 1927-2017). "The Spanish Comb" oil on canvas, n.d. Signed on lower left. A striking portrait of a stunning beauty entitled "The Spanish Comb" by award-winning artist John Koenig. Koenig's bust-length view of this attractive woman employs his signature loose brushwork and expressive style. The sitter wears a traditional Spanish black shawl or mantilla over her shoulders, gold hoop earrings, and a decorative comb known as a peineta to secure and adorn her fancy coiffure. Such combs have traditionally been worn by Spanish women during special occasions - flamenco performances, bullfights, weddings, Holy Week processions, etc. A stunning portrait of this young lady who perhaps caught Koenig's eye when he was attending the Academia de Barcelona. Size of sight view: 17.75" L x 13.5" W (45.1 cm x 34.3 cm) Size of frame: 27.125" L x 23.125" W (68.9 cm x 58.7 cm)

John Koenig painted in Taos, New Mexico from 1978 until 1997 when he moved to Asheville, North Carolina. He studied painting at the Art Students League in New York City as well as sculpture with Jack Pappasion. In addition, he studied at the Academia de Belle Arte in Florence, Italy and the Academia de Barcelona in Spain. His art has been exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Museum, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, the Farnsworth Museum and Wiscasset Museum in Maine, and The Taos Galleries in Taos, New Mexico and Scottsdale, Arizona. He has also exhibited at the National Arts Club, the National Academy of Design, Allied Artists of America Show, Salmagundi Club and the Fulton Gallery in New York. A recipient of many well-deserved awards and honors, his art has been widely collected in Europe and the United States.
