Description
John S. Koenig (American, 1927-2017). "The Spanish Comb" oil on canvas, n.d. Signed on lower left. A striking portrait of a stunning beauty entitled "The Spanish Comb" by award-winning artist John Koenig. Koenig's bust-length view of this attractive woman employs his signature loose brushwork and expressive style. The sitter wears a traditional Spanish black shawl or mantilla over her shoulders, gold hoop earrings, and a decorative comb known as a peineta to secure and adorn her fancy coiffure. Such combs have traditionally been worn by Spanish women during special occasions - flamenco performances, bullfights, weddings, Holy Week processions, etc. A stunning portrait of this young lady who perhaps caught Koenig's eye when he was attending the Academia de Barcelona. Size of sight view: 17.75" L x 13.5" W (45.1 cm x 34.3 cm) Size of frame: 27.125" L x 23.125" W (68.9 cm x 58.7 cm)
