Item Details
Description
Andy Warhol (1928-1987 American) "Four Children's Book Drawings" 1961 Graphite and Stamped Inks on Tracing Paper 11"x8.5" Images. A charming quad of drawings produced for an unpublished children's book in 1961. Titles include ". . . night covers me like a turtle's shell", "I am the captain of a ship of hay . . . ", ". . . sitting on the warm hearth, we watch snowdrops grow . . .", and ". . . in brown dirt, under green moss lives an orange salamander . . . ". Unsigned with letter of provenance. Examined and authenticated by Vincent Freemont and Fred Hughes, executors of Andy Warhol's estate in 1987. Comes with appraisal done by Sotheby's contemporary art department in 1999. Some minor tearing to upper edges and corners from mounting. Not examined outside of framing. Framed size 27"x22". Estate of Leigh Dean, Seattle. Provenance letter reads, "Sometime during the early Spring of 1961, when I had just begin a new career as an editorial assistant at McGraw-Hill in the Whittlesey House Department (later to be known as the Junior Book Division) and while I was struggling to find a publisher for one of my own children's book manuscript, Frances Keene, an author, translator, and editor put me in touch with a young man named Andy Warhol. Keene felt that my words teamed-up with Warhol's drawings would make an interesting publishing venture. I phoned Mr. Warhol and we made an appointment for me to come to his home on Lexington Avenue to deliver my manuscript. Evidently, my manuscript appealed to Andy because several weeks later I again visited his home to pick up my manuscript and the 4 watercolor and pencil sketches he had done . . . I thanked Mr. Warhol for his charming sketches. I told him I hoped his art would help sell my manuscript. He wished us both luck and I walked out of his home and out of his life. I never saw Andy Warhol in person, again. My manuscript went unpublished and together with the 4 sketches was forgotton. I went on to become a fiction editor at McGraw-Hill and a published author. On September 25th, 1987, I went to 'The Factory' or Warhol's studio. There Vincent Freemont and Fred Hughes, the executor of Warhol's estate, examined and authenticated the 4 sketches, and now have in their files Polaroid photographs and a Xerox copy of this provenance. This November 3rd, 1999, Leslie Prouty, of Sotheby's Contemporary Art Department, appraised the sketches at $4,000.00 each."
