DESCRIPTION: United States of America Civil War M1850 presentation sword inscribed at the scabbards mouthpiece "Presented to Capt Patrick Regan by the St. Patrick's Society of Oswego Sept 25th 1862". The sword features a sharkskin and wire wrapped handle, a scrolling basket hilt presenting open floral and scroll designs, a scabbard with brass bands as well as a chape etched with foliage and scroll designs throughout alongside "US", completed by ornate etched scroll designs at the blade with depictions of flags and weapons.
Impressed at the ricasso "W.H. Horstman & Son" alongside pictorial marks and "Iron Proof" at the spine of the blade.

Patrick Regan was a Captain in the 147th New York Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Oswego Regiment" or "Ploughboys". The regiment engaged in a number of battles for the Union during the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg.
