John Wallace Brown California, Massachusetts / Scotland (1850-1941) The Old Bridge, European City Scene, 1911 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right. From the collection of Edward P. Bentley, Art Researcher and Historian, Greenville, Michigan. Biography from the Archives of askART: John Wallace Brown was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1850. Brown immigrated to the U.S. with his family at age two and settled in Hanover, MA. In 1880 he moved to San Francisco where he was a marine engineer and ship designer. Upon retiring in 1910, he traveled to Holland, Italy, and England to study art for three years. Returning to California, he lived in San Francisco and Alameda until 1920 and then moved to Santa Barbara where he remained until his death on Nov. 7, 1941.
