Description
1837 TEXAS 1ed Sealsfield Lebensbilder Nathan American Regulator Daniel Boone
Karl Postl was a 19th-century Austrian writer who spent most of his literary career writing in America. Postl, who was much better known by his pseudonym Charles Sealsfield, wrote numerous travel novels many of which were based on American themes and locations. Curiously, in these works, Sealsfield portrays his anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant view (even though he himself was once an immigrant).
Perhaps his best voyage novel was “Lebensbilder aus beiden Hemisphären”, a set of travelogues the most famous of which was the story of Nathan the Squatter-Regulator. The book tells the tale of the, as Sealsfield says it, the first American in Texas. Nathan Strong, a Frenchman, poses as the narrator for this story set during the Spanish administration before the Louisiana Purchase. Sealsfield was heavily influenced by the life of Daniel Boone and built Nathan on the heroic stories of Boone making Nathan out to be the iconic American hero defending against lesser or inferior peoples such as the Spanish (Sammons)
This 1837 first edition of Sealsfields Nathan was published in Zurich as part of the complete Lebensbilder. A fine work of Austrian, pro-American literature.
