Description
North America, Alaska & Canada, Arctic Region, Late Pleistocene to Holocene era, ca. 100,000 years ago to 21st century CE. A fossilized horn core from a North American bison, a fossilized bone fragment from a prehistoric wooly mammoth, and a horn from a modern-day muskox! The muskox horn is attached to a portion of the animal's skull, both males and females have horns, but males have a thick boss on the forehead that the females lack - this horn is likely from a female. Similarly, bison males and females both have horns - though this bison horn core is probably impossible to identify the sex. Bison and muskoxen at some point migrated from Asia across the land bridge into North America. Unlike mammoths, bison and muskoxen were the few species of North American megafauna to survive the Pleistocene/Holocene extinction event. Size of muskox horn: 12" L x 3.5" W (30.5 cm x 8.9 cm)
