Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean, perhaps Dominican Republic, Taino (Arawak) people, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved hardstone pestle with a flared pounding face, a conical body, and a finial depicting an abstract jaguar lying in a recumbent pose. Pestles like this were used to prepare medicinal or shamanic ingredients. Size: 2.75" W x 5.25" H (7 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired September 25, 2018; ex-Arte Primitivo; ex-private New York, USA collection, by descent from the estate of Jose E. Alegria, Puerto Rico, acquired in the 1960s
