Description
South America, Argentina, Buenos Aires, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A handsome silver-copper alloy gaucho facon dagger and the original sheath, featuring an acid etched steel blade and textured decorative grip. The blade is adorned with scrolling vine motifs, one side is marked "AUGE FRERES / 526 RIVADAVIA / BUENOS AIRES." Before the handle is a leather and silver-copper guard, the grip is etched and textured by a linear and diamond motif. The sheath consists of a leather scabbard covered in a silver-copper chape and sleeve, etched and ornamented with a similar patterning to the handle and features a clip on one side for securing to the facon to the gaucho's belt. Gauchos considered facons to be more masculine than firearms and were popular for duels of honor, protection, and carried as accessories and symbols of prestige. Condition
Surface wear commensurate with age and use, surface nicks and minor indentations to pommel. Rubbing and softening to blade motifs, stamped maker mark is faint but legible. Dark patina and toning. Overall excellent condition.
