Description
Connecticut Valley scalloped-top and pinwheel carved Chippendale cherry chest of drawers. Connecticut or Massachusetts, ca. 1770. A recent discovery, this chest displays familiar design and construction details found on existing related pieces known from this small group. The extreme overhung and unique profile scalloped top is pegged to a solid pine sub-top above a classic "lum" drawer arrangement, typical of the Wethersfield, Connecticut area. Drawer arrangement is a large, full pinwheel carved square central drawer flanked by two pairs of short drawers above three graduated long drawers. Large applied fluted quarter columns. A molded base of bold ogee feet with spurs in the Colchester manner. Cherry wood with secondary woods pine and oak corner blocks at the feet. Condition: Chest in original condition retaining old mahoganized finish under a mid-19th century dry varnish surface. Brasses are replaced.Minor old repairs as expected. H 45". W (case) 36-1/2".
