Description
"Salt on Mina Mina", 2010 acrylic on unstretched linen painting by Aboriginal Australian artist Dorothy Robinson Napangardi. According to documentation from Altjira Gallery, Alice Springs, (including photos of the artist with the work,) "During the creation era, ancestral women of the Napangardi and Napanangka subsection groups gathered to perform ceremonies and take up Kana ceremonial digging sticks, which had magically emerged from the ground at mina Mina. A large belt of Eucalyptus trees now stand where the digging sticks emerged. Mina Mina is Dorothy Napangardi's custodial country, located on the border of Waliri and Kakatja lands, 320 km north-west of Alice Springs, in the Tanami Desert near Ngayurru (Lake Mackay.) These women from Minna Mina, the Kanha-kurlangu--those who possess the digging sticks danced their way across the desert in joyous exultation. Clutching their digging sticks in their outstretched hands the women visited many sites, resting at some, going underground at others, emerging and transforming themselves and the land as they moved in an easterly direction. The fine white dotting not only conveys the movement of the ancestral women and their progression across country but also details of the environment. Characterized among other features by sandhills, spinifex, claypans, water soakages and salt lakes. Claypan soakages are a large presence in the area of Mina mina. a soakage is a low point where the table intersects with the surface or where the water seeps out of the surrounding countryside. Not all claypans are saline however in those that are--such as the soakage at mina Mina salt is the last thing deposited and as the water evaporates it dries on the surface encrustations. This salt lake Ngayurru at mina mina stretches infinitely onward, etched with the tracks of the women as their paths stretch on, crossing and merging, telling their stories." Signed to verso.
