Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Holyland, Late Bronze Age, ca. 1500 to 1250 BCE. A remarkable stone vessel - perhaps an inkwell - carefully hand-carved to present a cuboid form with 4 sides boasting the relief of a lizard, each reptile shown with 4 legs flexed and splayed as body and tail snake along. Lizard imagery has persisted throughout human history; they're ability to shed their skin is often seen as a symbol of resurrection and they represented wisdom and good fortune in ancient Greece and Egypt. Size: 2" W x 1.2" H (5.1 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private prominent Daryl Kulok collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s
