BIOGRAPHY:
Pauline Bliss Williams, also known as Mrs. Ronald Croft, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1888. After her early education there, she re-located to New York City where she studied at the Art Students League where she took classes with Robert Henri, Vincent DuMond, F. Louis Mora, and George Bellows. While also known as a lecturer, illustrator and designer, Williams specialized in bright and impressionistic landscapes, portraits, still-lifes, and highly detailed miniatures painted on a variety of materials including canvas, ivory and porcelain. She exhibited widely from her home and studio in Rockport, Massachusetts, with exhibitions at The Society of Independent Artists, the National Association of Women Artists, The Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters, The National Society of Mural Painters, the Brooklyn Society of Miniature Painters, and the Springfield, Massachusetts Art Guild. Between 1957 and 1959 she exhibited her paintings in a traveling exhibition sponsored by the North Shore Art Association. Williams exhibited paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1941, the same year that The Society for the Sanity in Art, Chicago, gave Williams a prize. 1941 was the same year that she was accepted in the Salons of American Art. She is listed in a number of standard reference works on American artists including Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, Who Was Who in American Art, and in The Dictionary of Women Artists. Pauline Bliss Williams died in Rockport, Massachusetts after a brief stay at her home on the Atlantic Ocean in Daytona Beach, Florida, where she became an influential member and teacher at the Daytona Beach Art League built by Don Emery, Sr., and Frederick Dana Marsh, father of Reginald Marsh. There are many variants for the date and location of the death of Pauline Bliss Williams, also listed as Pauline Williams Croft, her married name. The Social Security Death Index lists August 15, 1968 as her date of death. Who Was Who in American Art lists her death date as 1969, while several commercial galleries list her death in 1962. Her Obituary printed in Rockport, Massachusetts, is dated 8/17/68 and references her death at home at 115 Marmion Way, Rockport, late on August 14th at 80 years of age. The Dickinson-Streeter Funeral Home in nearby Springfield, the city of her birth, officiated. There were no calling hours but an organ prelude prefaced the ceremony.
