E. J. Hughes Canada 1913-2007 Canadian War artist and student of Group of 7 members Frederick Varley and Lawren Harris. Hughes recieved both the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia. Hughes was a Royal Canadian Academy of Arts member and he received honorary degrees from Both Emily Carr University and the University of Victoria. His works are held by the National Gallery, Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Canadian War Museum (one of the first 3 Canadian war painters). Hughes also exhibited at the 1939 World’s Fair in San Francisco. This piece is entitled, The Car Ferry at Sidney. The stretcher on verso bears the label of the E.J. Hughes Gallery in Duncan, B.C.
