Sadamasa Montonaga, born on November 2, 1922 in Mie Prefecture, Japan, was a Japanese abstract artist who died on October 3, 2011 in Kobe, Japan, of prostate cancer. In his early days, he wanted to become a cartoonist, and in the late 1940s, he often created illustrations for local newspapers and magazines. Later influenced by JiroYoshihara and devoted to painting, he joined the specific (avant-gardeGutai group) art association in 1955 and has been active in international modern art ever since, participating in the Venice Biennale in 1993. He has long maintained a distinct sense of humor in his work, with images mostly based on simple lines and soft primary tones, and is known for his cheerful, funny, comical, friendly, easy to understand and engaging geometric elements. We can often sense the mundane, elegant and poetic design of his work.
