Item Details
Description
Group English Pearlware Prattware jugs, tea caddy and vase plus 1 rare Delft tile depicting a Native American. Includes one (1) pitcher or jug with molded image of the Duke of York to one side and Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and the Dauphin to the other, with relief leaf decoration throughout; one (1) oval form pitcher or jug having two heart-shaped vignettes depicting children playing to one side and a mother and father with the child to the other, with relief chain border to the top and relief leaf border to the base; one (1) round form pitcher or jug with relief decoration to each side depicting the farewell and return of a sailor and his lover, and leaf decoration throughout; one (1) pitcher with relief floral and medallion decoration; one (1) lozenge form teapot with mother and child mourning scene; and one (1) Quintal or 5-Finger vase with cobalt feather edge decoration to each finger and gilt foliate decoration to the body. All ranging in size from 4 1/4" H x 5 3/4" W to 7 1/4" H x 5" W. All items late 18th or early 19th century. Together with one (1) Delft tin-glazed earthenware tile depicting a standing Native American figure--barefoot with buckskin shirt and feather in hair--shown in profile and accompanied by ox-head corner decorations. Inscription en verso reads "ca. 1650." 5 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W. Note: The Native American figure is an unusual motif for Delft ceramics, and the early date makes the image of particular historical interest as an example of the growing fascination with Native Americans that swept through Europe beginning in the 16th century.

Private Illinois Collection.
