Volume 108 contains the first American appearance of Samuel Wilberforce's celebrated review of Darwin's Origin of the Species in the July issue (pp. 118-138): "On the Origin of Species, by means of Natural Selection; or, the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life." This article set the stage for Bishop Wilberforce's legendary debate with T.H. Huxley in June 1860. With the armorial bookplate of Wm. H. Scott.
