East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. Two hand-carved stone stamp seals, or chop stamps, with a cuboid form surmounted by a stylized Fu lion or dog. One is carved from a creamy beige and red shoushan stone, the Fu lions on top encircling each other. The other is carved from pale jadeite with a single crouching Fu lion. Seals had different names for the type of imprint they left due to the way the stamp was carved- the base underside of the shoushan stone is carved with an incised background to make the large characters stand out in relief - known as "yang wen" or "zhuwen." The other is a "yin wen" or "bai wen;" incised white letters on a red ground. Size (jadeite stamp): 1.25" L x 1.25" W x 3.5" H (3.2 cm x 3.2 cm x 8.9 cm);
