"An excellent source for information on the strategic and administrative operations of the Union navy and on the principal commanders.” Gustavus Vasa Fox was an officer of the US Navy who served during the Mexican-American War and as Asst Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. These volumes are of great historical importance on how the Navy responded to the Rebellion. The letters in volume one were written to Fox and by him while he was assistant Secretary of the Navy. The writers were leaders in the Cabinet, the Senate, the Army and Navy and civil life. The letters, written in the confidence of personal intimacy, express the opinions of the writers as no official reports could. Measure 9.5 in. x 6.5 in. x 4 in.
