Description
Originally offered at $650...
Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A lovely set of three forged-bronze axe heads of varying sizes from ancient Luristan. The first weapon features incised striations along the edge of the semicircular blade. The second and largest axe heads have thick rims around their slanted socketing shafts that aided in reinforcing the structure of the weapon when colliding with its intended target. All three weapons are covered in thick layers of green patina, and the smallest has the patina on both blades removed to showcase the metal color beneath. Size of largest: 5" L x 4" H (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm)
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

Patina on both ends of smallest axe head removed thus revealing base metal color. All pieces have heavy encrustations, abrasions to both blades and socketing shafts, and softening to finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina and nice earthen deposits throughout.
