Description
American Revolution
"DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE of the United States of America. July 4th, 1776" by ALEX. JAZET (1858)
October 1st, 1858-Dated, Historic Engraving titled, "DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE of the United States of America. July 4th, 1776", by Engraver ALEX. JAZET, After the original Painting by John Trumbull, Framed, Extremely Fine.
In 1820 historical American painter John Trumbull commissioned Asher B. Durand to engrave his original painting of, "The Declaration of Independence" (1787-1820 currently located at the Yale University Art Gallery), for the large commission sum of $3,000. This impressive Engraving is After both that original Trumbull painting and Asher Durand's earlier engraving. This currently offered engraving is impressive, richly printed on heavy wove period printing paper. The original engraved outer printing plate edge impression is easily seen, impressed into its oversized sheet for display. The full sheet measures about 19" x 28" (by sight), and appears to being housed in its original period walnut wooden frame with gilt inner trim and original backing, measuring fully to 22.5" x 31.5". Housed under protective UV Plexiglas it displays well, having a very faint outline trace of an underlying paper when printed as made nearly imperceptible near center. Overall, the scene has excellent contrast and is ready to hang. (We have not examined this print out of the frame.)
The Engraved Print is fully titled:
"DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / July 4th, 1776" (the date below in Script).
This beautiful print shows John Trumbull's famous painting of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence. Printed text immediately below the engraved image on the margin reads: (After) "Painted by JOHN TRUMBULL - Engraved by ALEX. JAZET - PRINTED by GOUDPIL & Co. - NEW YORK Published by M. KNOSDLER - PARIS - LONDON - BERLIN Published 1st October 1858 by GOUPIL & Co."
John Hancock is shown seated with the members of the Continental Congress in the foreground as John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, together present John Hancock with the Declaration for his first (iconic) signature. The many delegates from the other states are shown seated or standing around the perimeter of the room in the background. This current example is a very historic American original engraving commemorating one of the proudest moments in the history of these United States. In April 2017, we sold a nearly identical example for $7,800 and we fully expect this lovely print to meet or exceed that price.
