Description
Eight pieces, ca. 1853, includes six pear-shaped vessels #927 by Grosjean and Woodward with floral and acanthus chased repousse, reeded collars and lids, rusticated branch handles and leafy vine spouts, embellished with masks and scrolls. Kettle on stand with burner, 14 1/2" over handles; coffee pot, 9 1/2"; teapot, 8"; covered sugar bowl, 7"; milk jug, 6 1/2"; open waste bowl, 4 1/2"; spoon tree for 24 with passementerie detail by John Moore, #1940, 11 1/4"; dinner bell, unmarked, 4 1/2". All inscribed Hawley. 205 OT. Note: Merwin Hawley, Buffalo, NY, made his fortune shipping on the Erie Canal. This set has been in the possession of the Hawley family for six generations. Similar example in "Silver in America, 1840-1940", by Charles L. Venable, page 46.
Condition
Tea bell has slight abrasion on 1” of the edge radius; teapot has very shallow ¼” crease near the base, original ivory insulators have been replaced by Bakelite; Kettle: ivory insulator on handle is in poor condition; Coffee Pot: two tiny fleabites on body below spout. The set is in overall excellent condition.
